How the Pomodoro Technique Works

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management framework created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses structured intervals to alternate focused work sessions with short restorative breaks, reducing mental fatigue and helping maintain deep concentration.

Standard 4-Step Cycle

  1. Focus Session (25 min): Choose a specific task and work uninterrupted until the chime rings.
  2. Short Break (5 min): Step away from the screen, stretch, drink water, or breathe deeply.
  3. Repeat Cycles: Alternate focused intervals with short breaks.
  4. Long Break (15–30 min): Long break after every 4 completed focus sessions to recharge before starting a new round.

Why Ambient Background Sounds?

Repetitive background sound generators—such as white noise and filtered rain sounds—help mask unpredictable acoustic disturbances in open offices, libraries, or home workspaces without introducing distracting lyrics or melodic shifts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the timer lose accuracy when I switch tabs?

No. The timer engine calculates remaining time using absolute system timestamps (Date.now()) rather than simple interval ticks. When returning to the tab, it automatically re-syncs to the exact second.

Can I customize the focus and break durations?

Yes. Click the gear icon to adjust focus sessions (1–120 min), short breaks (1–60 min), long breaks (1–60 min), and cycle intervals. Your preferences are saved automatically in your browser.

Do ambient sounds require an internet connection?

No. All ambient sounds and completion chimes are synthesized in real-time by your browser using the Web Audio API, consuming 0 KB of network bandwidth and working completely offline.
